She couldn’t see anything but kept crawling ,letting her hands go ahead of her to feel the safety of the route she traveled. All she had to depend on were those feelings, and she hoped the feelings led her right out of her nightmare. She desperately wanted to be free and would endure anything just to ensure she didn’t have to go back to that dark place.
Alas, before she knew it,he had come back for her. Her efforts to scream and struggle proved futile as the strongly built arms held her and covered both eyes and mouth. Wrestling free was far from her reality in that moment ,cuz he was like a bulwark that wouldn’t budge.
Eventually she gave up and sulkily listened to his taunting threats and remarks of how she would never be freed from him, stuck with him forever, with no hope of rescue any day. She sobbed as the reality of her seemingly helpless situation hit her. All her attempts to escape so far only left her much hopeless than before. Perhaps he was right, she was stuck with him forever. She could feel her heart bleeding as the realisation dawned on her.

Suddenly, she could hear some shuffling, there seemed to be a commotion going on,his cohorts were screaming hysterically. She felt his grip loosen on her as he dashed off to ascertain what the cause of the commotion was. That was when she saw it,a dazzling light shone into the room,so bright was it that she had to cover her eyes to protect them from burning. Her eyes when finally adjusted to the light saw the most beautiful thing ever, her eyes beheld the most handsome man walking towards her,her heart thumped and throbbed, she could feel her throat go dry and literally feel the veins pumping blood and the rhythmic contraction seemed to be sending a message to her. A message to be strong because freedom was finally here.
He walked past her whilst flashing her the most beautiful smile she’d ever seen, her mouth was left open, drooling at his handsome stature and awesome smile. Her eyes followed him as he headed towards the centre of control in the place, her captor’s cohorts tried to keep him from advancing but were all thrown aside even without him lifting a finger. Who was this that needn’t even speak nor move and yet had these evil people defeated. The hope in her heart spread forth its wings ad began to soar, she watched intently as her fascination destroyed the equipments and set the rest of the captives free.
In the most melodious voice she’d ever heard, he said I came for you, let’s get going now,we got a lot to do. That was it,she didn’t need an announcement to know this was the freedom she had longed after. She took the step forward and took His hands and that was it,she was freed from the darkness that gnawed at her soul and rendered her helpless. After getting out,she looked back to see what had become of her old home, she noticed that the door had been firmly shut and bolted with the key in the hands of her savior. She could hear the screams of her captors and realised that as much as she hated them, they did keep her alive . her thoughts were interrupted by her Savior’s voice as he said “Honey, you may have existed in that place but you’re going to live now”. And that was the last she ever heard or saw of the darkness that was her home.

Indeed Christ came to set the captives free.

And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Colossians 2:15 NIV

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Hebrews 4:16 NIV

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:1-2 NIV

  1. Hhhhmm, we Christians sometimes grope in the dark, forgetting that we have the power to just up and leave the place. Thanks for the piece.

  2. Nice piece, I especially like the moment of looking back and mild regret at leaving the darkness behind. We are truly often like that longing to go back to things and people that have hurt or even nearly killed us. We get used to defeat which has become our comfort zone. After Jesus Christ gloriously rescues us it’s a new sometimes unpredictable environment in which we need to rely totally on Him and we don’t like that. We want to live our freedom on our own terms although those terms lead us into the bondage He rescued us from in the first place.
